Platform and learning curve

This is the first fault line. ChessBase only exists on Windows: on Mac or Linux, you have to go through a virtual machine or a second install, with the slowdowns that implies. And even on Windows, the interface carries thirty years of successive additions: piled-up menus, windows to rearrange, inherited shortcuts. Most users spend weeks before they are truly comfortable. NotiChess was rebuilt from scratch, runs natively on all three systems, and gets up to speed in a few minutes, with no documentation.

The game database

ChessBase’s Mega Database is a historical reference: about 11.7 million games since 1475, many of them annotated by masters — a real asset for studying the classics and top-level theory. NotiChess takes a different stance: 13 million games, 100% over-the-board, aggregated from more than 100 sources and the 190 national federations, and updated daily (versus a weekly update through a paid service at ChessBase). Above all, no rating filter: you find the games from national and regional circuits, exactly where you play, often absent from the market leader’s database.

Analysis and engines

ChessBase includes Stockfish, but full-power analysis and play often go through Fritz, sold separately. NotiChess runs Stockfish and Leela Chess Zero natively, at full strength, with no throttling or queue — two complementary views of every position, and automatic detection of each game’s tactical patterns, included.

Repertoire and training

With ChessBase, the repertoire is built by hand, and training goes through other products. NotiChess reverses the logic: your opening repertoire is generated from the database and enriches itself with every game, opponent preparation simulates your real opponent’s style, and exercises are built from your real weaknesses — not random puzzles.

Progress and synchronization

This is what ChessBase does not do: measure your progress. NotiChess turns every game into data tracked over time, and syncs directly with your Chess.com and Lichess accounts to analyze your real games, without exporting or importing anything by hand.

Does NotiChess work on Mac?

Yes, natively, just like on Windows and Linux. Unlike ChessBase, no virtual machine or workaround is needed.

Can I import my ChessBase games?

Yes, through PGN: you export your databases from ChessBase to PGN, then import them into NotiChess. Your Chess.com and Lichess accounts also sync automatically.

Is the database as large as the Mega Database?

It is even slightly larger in volume (13 million games versus about 11.7 million), 100% over-the-board and updated every day. The Mega Database, however, keeps the advantage of master-annotated games, valuable for studying top-level theory.

Do I own the software, like with ChessBase?

NotiChess works by subscription (monthly or yearly). If you prefer the “bought once” principle, the €490 lifetime license includes all updates, like a one-time purchase.

Is NotiChess really cheaper?
